The Al-Kindî Ensemble

Founded in 1983 by the french virtuoso of Arabzither (qânûn) Julien Jâlal Eddine Weiss, resident in Aleppo (capital of northernSyria and a stopping place on the famousSilk Road) iscurrentlyratedamong the best formations devoted to classicalArab music, owing to the musical qualitiesdisplayed by its performers, and to the high standard of itswork, steeped in the various musical traditions of the near and middle East. TakhtSharqi (traditional oriental ensemble), thisiscomposed of a qânun (a table zitherwithpinched strings), an Ud (oriental lute), a Nay (reed flute) and a riqq (small tambourine withlittlecymbals). Under Julien Weiss leadership, itsinterprets the classicalArabrepertoire setting the instruments intosharp relief, thusre-establishing a balance whichveryoftenexclusivelyfavoured the sungmelody.
